In Jane Austen’s “Emma,” Highbury, England’s own matchmaker, Emma Woodhouse, brings matrimony and misunderstanding to town in the early 19th century. Clarks Summit University’s Theatre Department will bring the story to life on October 26–28, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $8.

Miss Bates: Mayling Ijomah
Ijomah, a senior Communications and Elementary Education major, began her performing career at the age of 8, and she continued performing through a community theatre and drama club. She loves being able to step into someone else’s shoes and “be someone else.” It has helped her to gain confidence and to grow as a person by allowing her to experience new emotions and fully feel what others have felt. She has been able to see Christ through the theatre as it points her back to her Creator, explaining, “He is the Creator; I am a created being.” Her dream role would be “Éponine” in “Les Misérables.” While this is the second production she has acted in at CSU, she has been involved backstage in numerous plays as well.
Miss Bates is a scatter-brained, big ball of energy. She cares deeply about the well-being of others and does not seem to have a bad bone in her body. Both Ijomah and the character are caring, energetic, talkative people who value family and enjoy the little things in life. The difficulty of the role lies in understanding that no one is actually happy all the time. As the actor put it, “being able to convey the internal struggles doesn’t come as easy as a smile.” Ijomah challenges the audience to “truly experience the story coming to life.”
Jane Fairfax: Aubree Emmett
As a sophomore Counseling major new to theatre, Emmett took on this role to push herself. She hopes to figure out the abilities she did not know she had and learn how to use them. Emmett’s dream role would be “Katherine Plumber” in “Newsies.”
Jane Fairfax is an independent, reserved, young woman whom the quiet, shy individuals will be able to connect with throughout the play. Unlike Emmett, who is more trusting, the character is slow to warm up to people. Emmett admires the fact that even though her character is quiet, she is still strong willed. The role has been challenging to Emmett because the character is so reserved. While Emmett loves how sweet and good intentioned the character is, she hates that Jane allows other people to push her around and does not make decisions for herself. Emmett says the play will delight the audience with its humorous nature.
