2024 Spring Concert: All Things New

2024 Spring Concert: All Things New

Clarks Summit University prepares to host its annual spring concert, showcasing a vibrant array of musical genres and talents. The concert is scheduled to take place on the university’s Clarks Summit campus in the Murphy Memorial Library on Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4, at 7 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and under.

The concert promises to be a diverse musical journey. Director Adam Schwamb described the lineup, featuring choral works, bluegrass, jazz, classical, sacred and secular pieces, as a “wide spectrum of music and musical genres.”

“We want people to come and hear something that they immediately like, something they have never heard before, that stretches them a little bit,” Schwamb said, emphasizing the concert’s aim to cater to varied musical preferences.

The theme of the concert, “All Things New,” is inspired by a particular choral piece paraphrasing Revelation 21. It embodies both spiritual renewal and the rejuvenation of nature in spring. Schwamb highlighted the significance of this theme, reflecting the ethos of the season and celebrating the beauty of creation.

Students from various majors are participating in the concert, with most performers being non-music majors. These students demonstrate great dedication in their vital role in upholding the university’s vibrant arts community.

As for the repertoire selection, there is a meticulous process behind choosing each piece, considering both technical feasibility and thematic coherence. While students have input in selecting solo pieces, the overall programming is a collaborative effort between Schwamb and Dr. David “Doc” Harris, to maintain cohesion in the concert’s broader thematic vision.

It is important to recognize the educational value of musical participation as well. The multifaceted benefits include stress reduction, cognitive enhancement and spiritual edification. There is an intrinsic connection between music and worship, Schwamb described music-making as the fulfillment of both a scriptural command and a spiritually enriching experience.

In anticipation of the concert, CSU invites the public to immerse themselves in an evening of musical splendor, promising an uplifting experience for all attendees. Whether seeking spiritual rejuvenation, appreciation for the arts, or simply an enjoyable evening, the Clarks Summit University spring concert aims to delight and inspire audiences of all backgrounds.
